The Durbin Rocket
The Durbin Rocket is one of four different excursion options offered by the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. The others: The Cheat Mountain Salamander, The Tygart Flyer, and The Mountain Explorer all offer different trips through some of the most beautiful, back country scenery in West Virginia. The Durbin Rocket, however, is the only steam powered train offered. It departs from Durbin, West Virginia on a two hour excursion following the Greenbriar River. It's close proximity to The Cass Scenic Railroad makes it a great option for steam enthusiasts. The train is pulled by a Climax geared logging locomotive built in 1910. One of only three still operation in the world. Reason enough, in my opinion, to check it out. While you are in the area, I recommend checking out the Greenbrier River Trail. It is a rail to trail conversion suitable for biking, hiking and running. It is 79 miles long utilizing what was once part of the C & O railway.
