Virginia Museum of Technology
and
The O. Winston Link Museum

The sound you are hearing is the 1218.
When it is complete, click here to hear the 611.
The Virginia Museum of Technology is located in Roanoke, Virginia.  It showcases various forms of transportation important to the State of Virginia, but most importantly the O.Winston Link Museum, the N & W 611, and the N & W 1218. O. Winston Link was fascinated with steam locomotion and the Norfolk and Western Railroad. The N & W was the last mainline railroad to run steam on its rails. They produced, maintained, and operated some of the finest steam locomotives ever  made. In the late 50's, when most all other railroads converted to diesel power, the N & W still ran mainline steam and Link captured it in film and sound. He produced stunning images, mostly in black and white. His preparations were enormous with the outcome amazing. Link died in 2001 leaving behind  a collection of work that can be viewed at the museum. There are also prints, books, and recordings available for purchase, as well.

This is the building that houses the O.Winston Link Museum.
I was two shots in when I saw the sign that forbids photography. Boy did I feel dumb! At least I got a shot
of his photography equipment.

This is the Berk the Ohio Central purchased. It is currently under restoration.
